History of the Garden House   The Garden House was built in 1896 by Albert Wells Pettibone, Jr., son of the founder of the family lumber businesses: the Hannibal Saw Mill Company and the Hannibal Sash and Company.  The family?s love for natural woods is still evident throughout each of the House's rooms.  His brother built another Queen Ann home around the same time just two doors north.   The family eventually sold the House to Charles H. Trowbridge, of the Duffy-Trowbridge Stove Manufacturing Co. which in 1905 was ?Hannibal?s Most Important Home Industry.?  In the 1920?s Charles? son, Charles Albert, lived here until his new house on North Street was completed.  The subsequent owner was Will Griswold, founder of the furniture store still in operation on South Main.  The House is rich in history with plenty of old photos and artifacts of the area and era to tell its interesting stories!   When I find a well-drawn character in fiction or biography I generally take a warm personal interest in him, for the reason that I have known him before--met him on the river?Mark Twain THE EAST ROOM THE NORTH ROOM THE SOUTH ROOM THE WEST ROOM All Rooms Above Have Semi-Private Baths   OR BOOK A SUITE WITH PRIVATE BATH Southwest Suite (South and West Rooms) $235 Northwest Suite (North and West Rooms)  $225   The Garden House Today  Guests have the rule of the house in the Garden House's two parlors (historically, a gentlemen's and a ladies'), two foyers (downstairs and upstairs) and formal Iris dining room, historic front porch area.  All our bedrooms are appointed with Euro featherbeds,  pillows and comforters, triple-sheeted high thread count linens, soft, subtle cotton lounging robes, Wi-Fi accessible, local TV /DVD in each bedroom.   The South Room has a King brass bed with a yellow rose decor and a view of the Mississippi River.   The East Room boasts a unique four-poster Queen canopy bed and also overlooks the Mighty Mississippi River.   The West room is a secluded, quiet area of home with a beautiful cherry wood King size sleigh bed with afternoon sun.
